A strong early snow season has resulted in Ariens Co. selling out of snow throwers. Even though the company is still building them, the ones on the factory floor are all spoken for in their distribution chain.
“Ariens Co. snow thrower sales are already up 50% over last year,” says Dan Ariens President. Even with a slowing economy, this year’s snow season could be huge for Ariens, except for one factor: engines. Major engine supplier Tecumseh announced it was closing its Grafton, Wis. manufacturing plant in mid-December, leaving companies like Ariens Co. hanging since the announcement was made too late in the year for Ariens to identify and integrate a new engine and supplier into its product line. Most snow removal equipment sales have traditionally taken place after Christmas, and a good early season like the one the “snow belt” states are currently having is driving demand upward.
