A detailed history of products, technology, events, issues and industry personnel is captured in newly released, 1980s-vintage sets of Chain Saw Age magazine.
Every issue of Chain Saw Age throughout the 1980s, featured a “Service Department” article crafted by CSA technical editor, Donn Lawty, or guest experts from the field. A wide range of technical and diagnostic topics were explored in those 130 issues.
The industry’s last twin-cylinder chain saw, the Echo CST-610EVL, was dissected in CSA’s April 1986 edition. It was the first of many new-product teardown features that appeared in the later 1980s.

Chain Saw Age 1980s Archive Copies Now Available
Over 200 exclusive technical/service articles, a hot-saw project series, shop tips, a regular Q/A column, breaking industry news, logging sports results, new product releases, personnel moves, and much more, formed the meaty content of Chain Saw Age magazine throughout the 1980s.
CSA’s former Editor, Ken Morrison, still recalls the incredible effort and care that went into producing each of these editions, which may explain why he kept and preserved all the printing overages from 1980 through 1990. Now, after 30-plus years in storage, he is making them available to industry personnel, equipment collectors, and others interested in their unique content.
The issues have been arranged in annual sets that vary in size. Many are full, 12-issue sets, while others are partial sets. Because 99% of these copies were never imprinted or mailed, nearly all are in mint condition. Print quality and paper are high-end. And, there is plenty of content. During this era, CSA averaged about 60 pages per issue.
The cost is reasonable at $4.50 per issue. Thus, a full, 12-issue annual set costs just $54, plus economical at-cost shipping via U.S. Postal Service Priority flat-rate boxes.
Sales are on a first-come, first-served basis and, of course, supplies are limited.
Those interested in purchasing these rare sets should contact Morrison at [email protected] or call/leave voicemail message at 360-293-6593.
